That is, I tried starting a new game, I removed all but a few of the recent saves, I disabled auto save, and several times I verified the integrity of game cache in Steam (that didn't correct anything). Install the GOG version and start the game from FalloutLauncher.exe so you can customize Options which will create a new Fallout3 folder inside Documents > My Games that will have FALLOUT.INI and FalloutPrefs.ini inside. You may have already but you should look for any installed folders/files related to FO3 in your Documents > My Games folder and where you installed the game, then delete them. Using old files from the Steam version seems to cause a lot of issues for people. It is not needed anymore for the GOG version but it is still best to find and remove it just in case it may cause issues. GFWL is "Games for Windows LIVE", which was required to play FO3 with Steam. That's why I was happy to hear this game worked right outside the box. I don't know what GFWL is? Or where to see if it's still therre? But i uninstalled it when I returned the game.
